Bio

James McMillan, Director of Bands

Jefferson County High School

Mr.  McMillan is a native of Milledgeville, GA.  He attended Baldwin High School where he graduated in 2002.  In his senior year he received the John Philip Sousa Award the highest award available for a high school senior band member.  Mr. McMillan then attended Georgia College and State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education in 2007.  While attending Georgia College and State University he was a member of the Concert Band, Pep Band, Bobcat Brass Ensemble, and Jazz Band.  In 2009 Mr. McMillan was accepted to Vandercook College of Music in Chicago IL where he is currently pursing his Master of Music Education.

As a trumpeter Mr. McMillan has had the pleasure of playing with and under the direction of many world famous musicians and composers including jazz trumpeter Bryon Stripling, retired Marine Band conductor Col. John Beorgeois, jazz saxophonist Ronny Carter, jazz woodwind specialist Chris Vadala, and composer David Holsinger. In the spring of 2003 Mr. McMillan was selected to perform on a 21 day tour of the Czech Republic where he performed at the Letohrad International Music Festival and the Tyniste Jazz Festival with the Georgia College and State University Jazz Band.

Mr. McMillan began his teaching career as the Director of Bands at Louisville Middle School and also assisting the Jefferson County Warrior Band in Louisville GA.  In 2008 he was chosen to become the head Director of Band at Jefferson County High School.      

His professional memberships include Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA), International Trumpet Guild, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

He currently resides with wife and high school sweetheart Sarah McMillan in Louisville GA.
